American drones, Israeli drones
This entry is part of an ongoing series, Drone Watch 2010.
Last week was a busy one for the U.S. drone campaign in Pakistan, with four strikes in the span of five days, one of which killed the brother of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the high-ranking Taliban commander.
Meanwhile, Israel unveiled the Heron TP, a massive drone the size of a Boeing 737 jetliner that can fly as far as Iran.
The most recent drone strike came Thursday evening and hit a compound in the Dande Darpa Khel village in North Waziristan, killing Haqqani's brother Mohammed and other "associates" of the so-called Haqqani network, the Wall Street Journal reported. Mohammed reportedly allowed his home to be using by his brother and was "actively involved in the Afghan insurgency," according to the newspaper.
Dande Dapra Khel is reportedly home to many of Haqqani's relatives and has been attacked by drones on several occasions, Al-Jazeera reported.
On Wednesday, a drone fired two missiles into a compound in the Tabi Tolkhel village, also in North Waziristan, killing four suspected militants. One of them was reportedly Sheikh Mansoor, an Al-Qaida commander, according to the Long War Journal and Dawn. Mohammed Haqqani may have been killed while preparing for Mansoor's funeral.
On Sunday and Monday, two other drone strikes in North Waziristan killed a handful of people. The Monday attack killed four militants as they drove away from a compound in the village of Tabi Ghundi Kala. The Sunday strike killed at least five fighters at a suspected training ground near the village of Mir Ali.
